Skylar Diggins Makes History with a Triple-Double for the Seattle Storm

In a remarkable performance, Skylar Diggins became the second player in Seattle Storm history to achieve a triple-double, demonstrating her versatility and leadership on the court. The feat took place on Monday, solidifying her name in the WNBA record books. Diggins needed only three quarters to achieve this feat, finishing with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in just 22 minutes and 51 seconds of play. This mark sets a new WNBA record for the fewest minutes required for a triple-double, according to reports. The match, which saw Seattle defeat Connecticut with a score of 101-85, witnessed Diggins’ performance, who watched the last quarter from the bench, as her team had built a significant lead. Before Diggins, Temeka Johnson was the only Storm player with a triple-double in the regular season or playoffs. Johnson achieved 13 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds in an overtime loss against the New York Liberty in 2014. It should be noted that Diggins also achieved the first triple-double in the history of the WNBA All-Star Game this month, adding another milestone to her impressive career.

Reiterating the rebound and just chasing the basketball and how that helps us in the counterattack, just that mentality. I know I can rebound the ball, but I was really trying to chase it tonight. Then, obviously, the targets I can pass to, Nneka being one of them, people were getting open.

The player attributed her focus on rebounds to a conversation with Seattle coach Noelle Quinn during the All-Star break. Diggins noted that the mentality of pursuing the ball and contributing to the team’s transition game was key to her performance. Diggins’ ability to distribute assists was also evident, with seven of her 11 assists directed to Nneka Ogwumike, who led the game with 26 points.

It’s very rare that someone achieves that kind of thing, but when it happens, it makes sense when certain players do it and Sky is at the top of that list. I wouldn’t want to experience a triple-double with anyone else.

Coach Quinn, who was Johnson’s teammate when he achieved his triple-double, expressed her joy at seeing Diggins join this select group. Quinn highlighted the importance of rebounds for the team and Diggins’ positive impact on the game. Diggins also commented on her desire to recover after a defeat, focusing on giving her best on the court. The reaction of the Storm’s bench upon completing Diggins’ triple-double reflected the team’s admiration and support for their teammate.

Sky is a special player, and we all know it. She has been through a lot, especially in this regular season. For her to do that today, here, on the road in a game that we really needed, was just a special moment that she could share with her teammates. And I love that everyone loved that for her.
