Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham has been fined for the second time by the WNBA due to negative comments about the league’s referees. Cunningham revealed the news on his podcast “Show Me Something” earlier this week, indicating that the fine amounted to $1,500 for statements made the previous week.

The referees are very inconsistent.

In the debut episode of his podcast on July 28, Cunningham expressed his frustration with the refereeing, pointing out the lack of consistency in the decisions. “If I were a referee, I know I would make mistakes all the time. I’m not saying their job is easy, but when it’s a simple call in front of you several times, what are you doing?”, he commented. Cunningham reported that she learned about the second fine when the Fever’s general manager, Amber Cox, informed her that the league had contacted her. The player also addressed the widespread perception of the referees, saying: “I think players across the league, and new fans across the country, are wondering, ‘What’s going on with the referees?’ And I say, ‘I don’t know'”. Previously, Cunningham was fined $500 for a video posted on TikTok on July 18. In the video, she lip-synced to the lyrics of the song “Manchild” by Sabrina Carpenter, with the phrase “@ some referees” written on the video.
