Napheesa Collier Questions WNBA Leadership
Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier expressed strong criticism towards the WNBA’s direction in her exit interview on Tuesday. She accused the league commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, of being “negligent” in her management. Collier noted that the league has not adequately addressed issues related to arbitration, player compensation, and the overall state of the product. In addition, she alleged that Engelbert told her in a private conversation that Caitlin Clark and other prominent young players “should be on their knees” grateful for the platform the league has provided them.Collier, who is also the vice president of the WNBA Players Association, emphasized the need for a change in the league’s leadership. In response, Engelbert stated that she has the “utmost respect” for Collier, but felt “heartbroken” by the way their conversations were characterized. “My focus remains on ensuring a bright future for the players and the WNBA, including collaboration on how we continue to elevate the game,” Engelbert stated. The Lynx player, who missed Game 4 against the Phoenix Mercury due to an ankle injury, is also a co-founder of Unrivaled, a professional women’s basketball league. Collier’s potential conflict of interest has been the subject of scrutiny at a critical moment for the league’s future. The league’s players are in intense negotiations with the WNBA as they attempt to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. Collier’s statements could further intensify a conversation that could lead to a work stoppage in 2026. Collier revealed private conversations with Engelbert and other WNBA leaders, in which topics such as refereeing and player compensation were discussed. According to Collier, Engelbert told her that Caitlin Clark should be “grateful” for the platform the WNBA has provided her, as it has allegedly helped her generate off-court revenue. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve also defended the players and praised Collier’s leadership. “Obviously, Collier’s voice is very important,” Reeve said. Collier expressed his concern about the future of the WNBA, especially in relation to the participation of players in leagues like Unrivaled during the offseason. Collier also said that she is not worried about the possible consequences of her statements. “I’m sure they will fine me,” she said.“Our leadership’s response to being held accountable is to suppress everyone’s voices by imposing fines,” Collier said. “I’m not worried about the fines, I’m worried about the future of our sport. At some point, everyone deserves to hear the truth from someone who I hope has earned the benefit of the doubt to fight for what is right and fair for our athletes and our fans.”
