Georgia Amoore promises “grit” to the Washington Mystics
Australian point guard Georgia Amoore, known for her stature, has committed to bringing a competitive spirit and “grit” to the Washington Mystics after being selected sixth overall in the WNBA Draft.
The Mystics, who have a new coach and general manager, had three of the first six picks available on Monday (Tuesday AEST).
- Sonia Citron was selected at number 3.
- Kiki Iriafen at number 4.
- Amoore, guard from the University of Kentucky, with the sixth selection.
This selection marks the highest position for an Australian in a WNBA Draft since 2011, when Liz Cambage was chosen by the Tulsa Shock at number 2.
For as long as I’ve been told I’m too short, I’ve been working on how to counteract that. It’s not a surprise to me. I know I have to work in different ways, use my brain a little bit more. With my competitive experience, I think I have a little bit of grit that will keep me fighting.

Amoore was styled for the WNBA orange carpet by NBA star Russell Westbrook, who has a clothing brand called Honor The Gift.
Amoore mentioned that Westbrook designed her outfit and it was incredible to work with him since they first met in a Zoom session last November.
Originally from Ballarat, Amoore grew up playing several sports, including Australian rules football, cricket, netball and taekwondo, before focusing solely on basketball at the age of 17.
The 24-year-old player started in 155 of 157 games during five college seasons in the United States, averaging 19.6 points and 6.9 assists for Kentucky this season, after transferring from Virginia Tech.
