Alyssa Thomas Joins Project B, New Women’s Basketball League

WNBA star Alyssa Thomas has confirmed her participation in Project B, the new women’s basketball league that plans to begin operations in Europe and Asia in November 2026. Thomas, who was a finalist for the WNBA MVP award, joins Nneka Ogwumike as the first players to be part of this innovative league. The Phoenix Mercury star announced her decision via social media, a week after Ogwumike revealed her intention to play in this league, which promises high salaries and equity participation for the players.

Alyssa is the type of player and person on whom a project is built. Her leadership, competitiveness, and professionalism elevate everyone around her. As one of the most respected players in the world, she represents the new era of player partnership and global competition that Project B represents.

Thomas led the Phoenix Mercury to the WNBA Finals last season. The 6’2″ player has had an outstanding career in the WNBA, including five All-Star nominations. At 33 years old, Thomas has played abroad during the off-seasons and also participated in the inaugural season of Unrivaled last year. He will return to this 3×3 league in January, where he will coincide with several WNBA players. The B Project will have 66 players distributed across six teams. Each player will receive a salary higher than that currently offered in the WNBA. Although financial details haven’t been disclosed, the possibility of more lucrative compensation comes at a crucial time for professional women’s basketball, amid negotiations between the WNBA and the players’ union over a new collective bargaining agreement. The B Project plans to hold its inaugural season until April 2027, without interfering with the usual WNBA schedule.
