Allie Quigley Hangs Up Her Sneakers: A Women’s Basketball Legend Retires
Former Chicago Sky guard and WNBA shooting legend Allie Quigley has officially announced her retirement from basketball, three years after her last game. The news was shared this week. Quigley enjoyed a distinguished 14-year career in the WNBA, playing for the Sky, her hometown team, from 2013 to 2022. During her time with the team, she became a three-time All-Star and a four-time 3-point shooting champion, a record in the WNBA and the NBA. Although the retirement of the former DePaul star and Joliet, Illinois native was somewhat expected, she made it public this week.Quigley explained that she expected to get pregnant quickly and perhaps play one more season after having a baby, “but things didn’t happen as quickly as we would have liked. But they did happen!” Quigley and his wife, Courtney Vandersloot, welcomed their first child, Jana Christine, on April 8th of this year, and with her arrival, Quigley “feels ready to finally and officially say goodbye to her basketball career”. Before arriving in Chicago, Quigley played in the WNBA for Phoenix, Indiana, San Antonio, and Seattle. The Storm initially selected her in the second round of the 2008 draft before waiving her in training camp, but she was eventually recruited by the Mercury and spent her first two seasons in the league with them. During her career, Quigley averaged 10.9 points and 39.4% in 3-point shots, becoming a dominant force in the WNBA 3-point contest, which she won in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022. She also won two Sixth Player of the Year awards with the Sky.I just took the 2023 season off… then I took the 2024 season off… then I took the 2025 season off… you get the idea,” Quigley wrote. “But, jokes aside, I never really wanted to do an Irish goodbye. When I stepped away after 2022, it was for a very specific reason. It was to be able to start the next phase of my life: becoming a mother.”

Quigley was the Sky franchise’s top scorer until last month, when she was surpassed by Vandersloot. Vandersloot suffered an ACL tear that ended her season last weekend.I love knowing that I can look back on my career and say that it was really, really good, but it was part of the beginning of something truly great,” said Quigley.
