A’ja Wilson Shines: Las Vegas Aces One Step Away from WNBA Title

In an exciting match that kept fans on the edge of their seats, A’ja Wilson led the Las Vegas Aces to a crucial victory over the Phoenix Mercury with a score of 90-88. This triumph puts the Aces just one win away from securing their third championship in four years. With five seconds left on the clock and the score tied, Wilson received the ball, dodged the double team of DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas, and launched a shot that sealed the victory. The shot, which went in and out of the hoop, was the ninth game-winning shot in the last five seconds of a Finals game in WNBA history.

“Give the ball to A’ja, and get out of the way,” joked coach Becky Hammon, describing the play.

Wilson, with a stellar performance, finished the game with 34 points, 14 rebounds, and demonstrated her impact on both ends of the court. Her performance included an impressive 59% shooting efficiency on contested shots and limited the Mercury to 18% when she was defending. Despite a crucial error, where she lost the ball in a key play, Wilson remained focused and led her team to victory. “I knew I had to recover something,” declared Wilson, highlighting her determination. The Aces dominated the game for the first 30 minutes, but the Mercury showed remarkable resilience in the final quarter, overcoming a significant deficit. “We had to weather the storm,” Hammon commented. Now, with the Aces leading the series 3-0, the team is on the verge of glory. The Mercury, on the other hand, face a monumental challenge, needing to win four consecutive games to claim the championship.

The last time there was a sweep in the WNBA Finals was in 2020, when the Aces lost to the Seattle Storm.
