A’ja Wilson Makes History: Four-Time WNBA MVP

A’ja Wilson, star of the Las Vegas Aces, has been awarded the WNBA MVP for the fourth time, solidifying her legacy in the league. The official announcement was made on Sunday, marking a milestone in the history of women’s basketball. Wilson, who had already won the award in two consecutive years, surpassed her competitors in a close vote. She obtained 51 votes for first place, accumulating a total of 657 points, surpassing Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx, who obtained second place with 18 votes and 534 points. The award presentation was a surprise for Wilson, who received the trophy from WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert and her partner, Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo, at the end of a training session.

“It hasn’t been easy for us. We were written off,” Wilson declared emotionally to her teammates. “They counted us all out, but we showed up every day. This bears my name, but it’s for all of us. There’s no prize without each and every one of you.”

This recognition places Wilson above legends like Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson, who won the award three times. Wilson also joins Cynthia Cooper as the only players to be unanimous MVPs. In addition to her four MVP awards, Wilson was also named Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Aces coach Becky Hammon expressed her admiration for Wilson, stating that “she is already the best of all time.” Wilson led the WNBA with an average of 23.4 points and 2.3 blocks per game, in addition to 10.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists. Her performance was key for the Aces to finish the regular season with a 30-14 record and position themselves as the second-best team in the league. Wilson and the Aces face the Indiana Fever in the semifinals, starting on Sunday.
