Adam Silver Confident in a Labor Agreement for the WNBA Despite Tensions

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed confidence that a new collective bargaining agreement will be reached with the WNBA players, although he acknowledged the need to address and repair certain tensions in the relationships. These tensions became evident recently, highlighting the criticisms directed towards commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Minnesota Lynx player Napheesa Collier went on to say that the league has the “worst leadership in the world”.

There are issues we must address with our players, not just economic ones. There are also relationship issues. I trust that we can solve them over time and that this league can continue with the upward trajectory it has at the moment.

Silver emphasized the importance of focusing on the game and the WNBA Finals, while also working on the negotiation of the new collective agreement. The league and players association negotiators are expected to meet to advance negotiations. The players are seeking significant changes following the notable growth of the WNBA in recent seasons, and they have expressed their frustration, although not all with the same vehemence as Collier. Former Lakers player Derek Fisher, who was president of the National Basketball Players Association in 2011, commented on the situation, noting that, although it is unusual, he understands the emotions expressed by the players. Fisher, who has also been a coach in the WNBA, highlighted the adverse nature that can arise in high-level negotiations. Silver reiterated his conviction to reach an agreement. Fisher suggested that WNBA players feel they haven’t been valued enough and that there is a disconnect with the league’s management. Fisher also mentioned that the league’s growth has been fueled by players like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, and that the players are looking to secure a better future for future generations.
