Wimbledon Upsets: Zheng and Pegula Eliminated in the First Round
In a day full of surprises at the Wimbledon tournament, two of the main seeded players in the women’s draw suffered unexpected defeats in the first round. Qinwen Zheng, world number 5, and Jessica Pegula, third seed, were eliminated, marking a shocking start to the prestigious championship.
Qinwen Zheng, Olympic medalist, fell to Katerina Siniakova with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. This defeat represents the third consecutive time that Zheng is eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon. Siniakova, for her part, will face Naomi Osaka in the next phase.
Siniakova, known for her success in doubles, where she has won three titles at Wimbledon, including last year’s with Taylor Townsend, will seek to advance in the singles tournament.
In another notable match, Barbora Krejcikova, seeded number 17, had to come from behind to defeat Alexandra Eala, who holds the 56th position in the ranking. Krejcikova won with scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a match played on the center court.
Eala, 20 years old and representing the Philippines, was seeking her fourth victory against a top 20 player in 2025, but Krejcikova managed to impose her game after a difficult start.
In addition, the young Canadian Victoria Mboko, who entered the main draw as a “lucky loser”, surprised by defeating Magdalena Frech, seed number 25, with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Iga Swiatek, fifth seed and five-time Grand Slam champion, managed to overcome Polina Kudermetova with a score of 7-5, 6-1. Swiatek expressed her satisfaction with the performance in the second set and thanked the public for their support.
Mirra Andreeva also advanced to the next round after defeating Mayar Sherif with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
