The 2025 tennis season has shown a remarkable performance by American tennis players. Madison Keys started the year with the title at the Australian Open, and Coco Gauff followed in her footsteps at the French Open last month. In addition, eight Americans reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros, the most in 40 years. After Paris, three American men (Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Ben Shelton) were ranked in the top 10 for the first time since 2006. In the women’s division, four Americans (Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Keys, and Emma Navarro) remain in the top ten.
Wimbledon began with high expectations, with 35 Americans in the main draw, the highest number since 1999. However, the tournament has presented challenges for the United States representatives. Despite the previous results, only four Americans remain in the fourth round, after a first week full of surprises, including the eliminations of Gauff and Pegula.
The last time an American woman won the individual title at Wimbledon was Serena Williams in 2016, and an American man, Pete Sampras, achieved it in the year 2000. Below, an analysis of the American players still competing and their path in the tournament.
Players defeated: Petra Kvitova, Veronika Kudermetova, Barbora Krejcikova
Next opponent: Mirra Andreeva
Navarro surprised the tennis world with her straight-sets victory over Gauff last year, reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. With experience in major tournaments, Navarro has advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open and the semifinals of the Australian Open. Despite a 4-3 record on grass before Wimbledon and a first-round loss at the French Open, Navarro has shown impressive play, including victories over two former Wimbledon champions.
In her first-round match against Kvitova, Navarro allowed Kvitova only four games. Then, she defeated defending champion Krejcikova with a comeback of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. This is Navarro’s fifth appearance in the round of 16 in the last six Grand Slam tournaments, matching Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka.
In their next match, Navarro will face Andreeva, an 18-year-old young promise. Andreeva, a semi-finalist at the 2024 French Open, will seek to reach her first quarter-final at Wimbledon. Navarro commented that she was “excited” about the match, highlighting Andreeva’s power and skill. The winner of this match will face Ekaterina Alexandrova or Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals.
Anisimova is having a standout season. The 23-year-old player, who returned after a break for mental health at the beginning of 2024, won the most important title of her career at the Qatar Open and has reached the fourth round at the French Open and the final at Queen’s Club. Currently at her best ranking (no. 12), she could enter the top 10.
Anisimova surprised in the first round with a victory over Putintseva. She has lost only one set on her way and showed control against Galfi in the third round. Anisimova will have the opportunity to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second time in her career. If she wins, she would face Sonay Kartal or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals.Taylor Fritz has won five of his ten titles on grass and has reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals twice.
Male Branch
Taylor Fritz
Players defeated: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Gabriel Diallo, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Next rival: Jordan Thompson
Fritz, the highest-ranked American man, arrived at the All England Club after winning titles on grass in Stuttgart and Eastbourne. With five grass titles, Fritz has been an exception. A two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist, Fritz needed decisive sets in his first two matches. In his first-round match against Mpetshi Perricard, he had to overcome the opponent’s serve and achieved a victory. In the third round, Fritz defeated Davidovich Fokina.
Fritz will face Thompson, with whom he has split victories. Fritz feels confident, but aware that Thompson will be a difficult rival. If Fritz wins, he will face the winner of the match between Karen Khachanov and Kamil Majchrzak, having the opportunity to reach the semifinals.
Ben Shelton
Players defeated: Alex Bolt, Rinky Hijikata, Marton Fucsovics
Next opponent: Lorenzo Sonego
Shelton, 22, has already reached two Grand Slam semi-finals and won two ATP titles. He has reached the second week of Wimbledon for the second consecutive year thanks to three dominant performances. Shelton was imposing in his second-round match. With a victory over Fucsovics, he has not yet lost a set in the tournament and will be the favorite in his next match against Sonego. Shelton has a 3-1 record against Sonego.
Shelton will seek to reach his first quarter-finals at the All England Club. If he were to win, he could face Jannik Sinner.
