Vondrousova Conquers Berlin Open: A Triumphant Return

Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova demonstrated her resilience by defeating Chinese player Wang Xinyu at the Berlin Open. Vondrousova needed three sets to secure the victory, thus completing a surprising return to the top of tennis. The 25-year-old Czech tennis player won her first title since her triumph in London two years ago. After a year marked by injuries that relegated her to 164th in the world, Vondrousova demonstrated her tenacity in the final. The match, which went to three sets, ended with a score of 7-6 (10), 4-6, and 6-2. Vondrousova had to give her all, including saving six set points in the closely contested tiebreak of the first set.

It’s good to see a full court. I really enjoyed the tennis week and the support. I feel like it couldn’t have been better for us here. We all worked very hard. We came here to try to win the first match. So very happy.

Wang, who had to overcome the qualifying phase and defeat four top 20 players to reach her first circuit final, maintained the pressure with her precision on the baseline. Vondrousova’s serve seemed unbreakable until Wang got her first break point in the seventh game, breaking her opponent’s serve, who suffered a slip and injured her ankle. However, Vondrousova reacted and took the tiebreak after Wang wasted six set points. Wang, 23, showed composure and tied the match after breaking his opponent’s serve once in the second set. Vondrousova, who defeated Madison Keys in the first round and Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals, regained control with two breaks of her own, going up 4-1 in the final set. Finally, Vondrousova played an impeccable service game at 5-2, with an excellent drop shot, a winning cross-court forehand, and a powerful forehand that forced an error from Wang on the first match point.
