Venus Williams Bids Farewell to the DC Open with an Ovation

Tennis player Venus Williams, after a notable effort, saw her winning streak interrupted at the DC Open. Despite the defeat, the tennis legend received an emotional standing ovation from the audience present. The match, which ended with a score of 6-2 and 6-2 in favor of Magdalena Frech, marked Williams’ return to competition after more than a year of absence. For the seven-time Grand Slam champion, this tournament meant much more than a simple competition.

I had a lot of fun. It’s definitely not the result I wanted, but it’s still a learning experience. The thing about sports (and) life is that you never stop learning.

Williams’ victory in the first round against Peyton Stearns made her the oldest player to win a singles match at the tournament level since Martina Navratilova in 2004. This hard-court tournament was the first for Williams since March 2024, following surgery for uterine fibroids.

Williams competed in a total of four matches, two in singles and two in doubles, which ultimately took its toll. His last streak of consecutive victories dates back to August 2019 at the Cincinnati Open, where he achieved three victories before falling in the quarterfinals. The match against Frech started promisingly for Williams, who took a 2-1 lead. However, Frech recovered and dominated the first set and led the second. Frech, 27 years old and originally from Poland, had her best performance in a Grand Slam by reaching the fourth round of the 2024 Australian Open. The public gave Williams great support, recognizing her effort and dedication on the court. Despite the defeat, the tennis player showed determination and optimism for the future. Williams accepted an invitation to participate in the Cincinnati Open next month.
