Venus Williams Falls in Doubles at the DC Open

Venus Williams’ participation in doubles alongside Hailey Baptiste at the DC Open came to an end in the second round on Wednesday, after losing 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 in a tiebreak against second seeds Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai. Williams, 45, is competing in her first tournament in over a year and her first doubles participation since 2022. The Williams-Baptiste duo achieved a victory in the first round on Monday. Williams will play her second-round singles match on Thursday against Magdalena Frech. On Tuesday, Williams became the second-oldest woman to win a singles match at the circuit level, defeating Peyton Stearns in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. After that victory, the first in almost two years, Williams received a wild-card invitation to the Cincinnati Open next month.

Other DC Open Results

In other women’s singles matches at the DC Open on Wednesday, second seed Emma Navarro was eliminated by Maria Sakkari 7-5, 7-6 (1) in the night session. Sakkari was the runner-up to Coco Gauff in Washington in 2023. Also, Anna Kalinskaya, not being seeded, eliminated eighth seed Magda Linette 6-4, 6-0.
