Venus Williams Falls in Doubles at the DC Open

Venus Williams’ participation in doubles alongside Hailey Baptiste at the DC Open came to an end in the second round this Wednesday, after losing with a score of 6-4, 3-6 and 10-6 in the tiebreaker against Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai. Williams, 45, is competing in her first tournament in over a year and her first doubles participation since 2022. On Monday, along with Baptiste, they achieved a victory in the first round. Venus Williams will play her second-round singles match on Thursday against Magdalena Frech. On Tuesday, Williams became the second-oldest woman to win a singles match at the tournament level, after defeating Peyton Stearns in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. After that victory, the first in almost two years, Williams received an invitation to the Cincinnati Open next month. In other women’s singles results from the DC Open, second seed Emma Navarro was eliminated by Maria Sakkari with a score of 7-5, 7-6 (1) in the night session. Sakkari was runner-up in Washington in 2023, behind Coco Gauff. In addition, Anna Kalinskaya, not being a seed, eliminated the eighth seed Magda Linette with a score of 6-4, 6-0.
