Venus Williams Returns to the US Open with a Wild Card
New York – Iconic tennis player Venus Williams has been granted a wildcard to participate in the US Open, marking her expected return to Grand Slam tournaments after a two-year absence. At 45 years old, Williams is preparing to compete in singles at Flushing Meadows.
According to data from the International Tennis Federation, Williams will become the oldest player to compete in the individual category of the tournament, since Renée Richards, who participated at 47 years old in 1981.
Previously, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) had granted him an invitation to the mixed doubles tournament, which will take place next week. The US Open singles matches will begin on August 24 in New York.
Throughout her outstanding career, Williams has accumulated an impressive record, including individual titles at the US Open in the years 2000 and 2001. In addition, she has won 14 titles in women’s doubles, all with her sister Serena, and two in mixed doubles. Serena Williams, with 23 Grand Slam singles titles, retired after her participation in the 2022 US Open.
