Injury Withdrawals Mark the US Open
A total of seven male tennis players have been forced to withdraw from the US Open due to injuries, raising concerns at the Grand Slam tournament. Flavio Cobolli, Daniel Altmaier, and Kamil Majchrzak retired during their third-round matches. These are in addition to Ben Shelton, who had already announced his withdrawal due to a left shoulder injury. Sebastian Korda and Juncheng Shang were also forced to withdraw in the first round, while Jack Draper retired before his second-round match. Novak Djokovic, despite a back problem, managed to overcome Cam Norrie and advance to the fourth round, becoming the oldest tennis player to achieve this since Jimmy Connors in 1991. Cobolli, upon retiring, explained that he felt discomfort in his right arm during his match against Lorenzo Musetti.Musetti commented that Cobolli’s accumulation of matches in the previous rounds may have influenced his physical condition, regretting the way the match ended and wishing his compatriot a speedy recovery. Compared to other tournaments, Wimbledon recorded five men’s retirements, the French Open six plus two walkovers, and the Australian Open nine. In the US Open, there have also been two retirements in the women’s category: Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the first round and Eva Lys in the second.I knew at the beginning of the match that I was at the limit, and I played many hours in those days and didn’t recover as I wanted. I think it would get worse if I continued in that match.
