Sinner and Sabalenka lead the list of former champions at the US Open
The current champions, Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, who lead the tennis rankings, head the list of ten former US Open winners who are on the entry lists for this year’s tournament, as announced on Tuesday.
The U.S. Tennis Association reported that the participants include 18 Grand Slam singles champions.
The direct entry to the last major tennis tournament of the season was based on the rankings up to July 14th. The cut was at number 101 for men and number 99 for women.
Sinner won his fourth Grand Slam title by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.
Sabalenka lost in the semifinals to Amanda Anisimova, who, ranked number 7, is one of the four American women ranked in the top 8.
The United States led all countries with 30 players (16 women, 14 men) who earned direct entry.
Among the players who used a special or protected ranking to qualify were Nick Kyrgios, Petra Kvitova, and Sorana Cirstea.
The game in the main box starts on August 24.
