ORLANDO, Fla. – Craig Tiley will take over as CEO of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) this year, the organization that runs the US Open announced on Tuesday. Tiley will leave his position as Tennis Australia director and director of its Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open. The USTA announced in a press release that Tiley will begin his new job in the coming months. Replaces Lew Sherr, who left the USTA last year to join the New York Mets as their president of business operations. Sherr had been CEO of the USTA since 2022. Tiley, originally from South Africa, was the head coach of the University of Illinois men’s tennis team from 1994 to 2005, including an NCAA championship and a 32-0 record in 2003. He was the tournament director of the Australian Open from 2006 and oversaw its expansion to a 15-day event, breaking attendance and revenue records. Tiley became CEO of Tennis Australia in 2013.

“Craig brings a rare combination of global credibility at the highest level of sport and a proven commitment to the growth of the game from the grassroots. That balance is exactly what this moment requires,” said Brian Vahaly, USTA Board Chairman and Interim Co-CEO of USTA.

Tiley expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge of taking on the leadership at the USTA, and was confident of leaving the Australian Open in excellent shape. “I am incredibly proud that Tennis Australia is now globally recognized as the players’ partner and the benchmark for the sport, events and entertainment,” Tiley said. “Sport in Australia is in excellent shape. Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the country, and participation is growing strongly.”
