American tennis player Taylor Fritz overcame a tough challenge against Lloyd Harris to advance to the third round of the US Open, solidifying his excellent performance this summer. Fritz, who is seeded fourth and was the US Open runner-up last year, managed to recover after losing the first set, securing the victory with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 and 6-4. In the first two sets, Fritz didn’t take advantage of any of the eight break opportunities. However, in the last two sets, he converted 5 of 7.

I’ve known Lloyd forever. He’s dangerous because he’s solid from the back. He doesn’t make many mistakes and has a very good serve, so if you’re not at your best, it’s very easy… I had a few break chances. He played well to save the break points.

Frances Tiafoe, seeded number 17, also advanced to the third round after defeating another American, Martin Damm Jr., with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (8) and 7-5. Tiafoe stood out by winning 86% of the points with his first serve and saving the three break points he faced, achieving 13 aces and committing only one double fault.

He fought incredibly well. He’s going to be a nightmare for many.

Since the beginning of 2020, Tiafoe has accumulated 22 victories at the US Open, surpassed only by Daniil Medvedev, who has 25. For his part, Fritz has an impressive 23-5 record since the end of Roland Garros, being the player with the most victories on the men’s circuit in that period. He is closely followed by American Ben Shelton (20-6), who defeated Pablo Carreño Busta 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4. Fritz and Shelton are competing to be the highest-ranked American tennis player at the end of the tournament. Shelton, with fewer points to defend, would need to reach the round of 16 and advance one round further than Fritz to surpass him in the ranking. In the next round, Fritz will face Swiss player Jerome Kym, who defeated American Brandon Nakashima with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5, 3-6 and 7-6 (8). Another American who suffered a defeat was Marcos Giron, who couldn’t prevent Benjamin Bonzi’s comeback, after his victory in the first round against Medvedev. Bonzi, of French nationality, managed to come back from two sets down to beat Giron with a score of 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and 6-4. Eliot Spizzirri also fell defeated, losing 6-0, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4 to Italian Luciano Darderi, seeded number 32.
