In an exciting Davis Cup encounter held in Bologna, Spain achieved a spectacular comeback to secure their place in the semi-finals, defeating the Czech Republic with a score of 2-1.

Granollers and Martínez, Heroes of the Day

The pair formed by Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez Portero emerged as the key to the Spanish triumph. In a decisive doubles match, they managed to defeat Tomas Machac and Jakub Mensik, thus sealing the victory for Spain. The Spanish team had to overcome the absence of their star, Carlos Alcaraz, who was forced to withdraw due to a hamstring injury. Despite this significant loss, Granollers and Martínez took the lead and guided Spain to the semifinals. Spain, which hadn’t reached the semifinals since its victory in 2019, where it won its sixth Davis Cup title, will now face Germany, which secured its spot after defeating Argentina with the same score of 2-1.

Germany Advances Too

In the match between Germany and Argentina, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, in a close doubles match that was decided in a tiebreak of the third set, secured the victory for Germany. The doubles match between Granollers/Martínez and Machac/Mensik was decided with partial scores of 7-6 (8), 7-6 (8) at the SuperTennis Arena. Jakub Mensik, with 20 aces, had given the advantage to the Czech Republic by defeating Pablo Carreño Busta. However, Jaume Munar tied the series for Spain by defeating Jiri Lehecka. Munar expressed his confidence: “No matter who is in front, I had a lot of confidence in myself and that is the main thing”. In the other match, Tomas Martin Etcheverry put Argentina ahead, but Alexander Zverev equalized for Germany. In the doubles, Krawietz and Puetz came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10). The Davis Cup in Bologna, in its sixth edition, continues with Italy, who are seeking their third consecutive title, facing Belgium in the other semi-final. Italy will not have Jannik Sinner, who is resting.
