Jannik Sinner Reinstates Umberto Ferrara as Fitness Coach
The Italian tennis player and current world number one, Jannik Sinner, has announced the re-incorporation of Umberto Ferrara as his physical trainer. The news was confirmed this Wednesday, marking a new chapter in the preparation of the Wimbledon champion. The decision comes after Sinner ended his working relationship with Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi last year. This occurred following an investigation into Sinner’s positive tests for the banned substance clostebol, detected in March. In February, Sinner was suspended for three months, an agreement reached with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). WADA had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) the decision of an independent tribunal in August, which exonerated Sinner of any wrongdoing. Sinner, who returned to competition in May and lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final before defeating him at Wimbledon, explained that clostebol, a substance that can increase muscle mass, entered his system after Naldi applied an over-the-counter aerosol to a wound on his own hand before treating Sinner. The aerosol had been provided to Naldi by Ferrara. The independent tribunal determined that Sinner was not at fault or negligent, accepting that the substance had contaminated him inadvertently. During last year’s US Open, Sinner explained his decision to separate from Ferrara and Naldi, stating that “he didn’t feel confident enough to continue with them”. Ferrara, who attributed the responsibility for the incident to Naldi, worked with Matteo Berrettini this year.“The decision was made in conjunction with Jannik’s management team, as part of the ongoing preparations for the upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. Umberto has played an important role in Jannik’s development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level,” communicated Sinner’s team.
