Jannik Sinner advances authoritatively to the US Open quarterfinals
In a demonstration of absolute dominance, Jannik Sinner, the world’s number one tennis player, crushed Alexander Bublik with a resounding 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, securing his place in the US Open quarterfinals.
The match, which lasted only 1 hour and 21 minutes, became the second shortest match of the tournament, surpassed only by Tomas Machac’s victory in the first round.
Sinner, who had suffered a defeat against Bublik in June in Halle, Germany, on a grass court, demonstrated his superiority on the hard court of the US Open, making it clear that defeating the defending champion is a nearly impossible task.
With this victory, Sinner extends his winning streak in Grand Slam tournaments on hard court to 25 consecutive matches, tying John McEnroe in fifth place on the historical list.
The three games conceded by Sinner in this match represent the fewest in a second week of the US Open since the 2015 semi-finals.
In the quarterfinals, Sinner will face his Italian compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, seeded number 10, on Wednesday. The other quarterfinal match that day will be between Alex de Minaur, number 8, and Felix Auger-Aliassime, number 25.
Bublik, seeded number 23 from Kazakhstan, arrived at the match as one of the most in-form players on the circuit, with 11 consecutive victories and three titles on the ATP Tour.
Despite having won his 55 service games prior to the match, Bublik was broken eight times by Sinner.
Sinner, with this victory, raises his record to 35-4 this year. Alcaraz defeated him in the Roland Garros final, as well as in Rome and Cincinnati.
