WUHAN, China – Aryna Sabalenka continues her winning streak in Wuhan, accumulating 20 consecutive victories after her 6-3, 6-3 triumph over eighth-seeded Elena Rybakina this Friday. This victory secures her a place in the semifinals of the WTA 1000 tournament.
Sabalenka, current US Open champion, had already won the Wuhan Open title in 2018, 2019 and last year, marking her return to the Chinese city.
In a match that lasted 1 hour and 25 minutes, the world number one, Sabalenka, managed to break Rybakina’s serve on three occasions. At the end, the tennis player sent greetings and kisses to the audience present.
Coco Gauff, the third seed, also secured her place in the semifinals with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory over Laura Siegemund. This is the second consecutive semifinal for Gauff.
Gauff will face Iga Swiatek, number 2 in the ranking, or Jasmine Paolini in the next round, who faced each other in a later match.
For her part, Sabalenka will face Jessica Pegula, sixth seed, who previously needed a third set to obtain her seventh consecutive victory. Pegula defeated Katerina Siniakova with partials of 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, after losing the first set.
Pegula reaches this stage after defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova, number 9 in the ranking, and her American compatriot Hailey Baptiste, in a match where she needed seven match points to secure the victory.
