WUHAN, China – Aryna Sabalenka continues her winning streak in Wuhan, extending it to 20 matches after a victory over eighth-seeded Elena Rybakina, with a score of 6-3, 6-3. This triumph secures her a place in the semifinals of the WTA 1000 tournament.
The current US Open champion, Sabalenka, had already won the Wuhan Open title in 2018, 2019 and last year, marking her return to the Chinese city.
In a match that lasted 1 hour and 25 minutes, the world number one, Sabalenka, managed to break Rybakina’s serve on three occasions, thus securing her place in the semifinals for the eleventh time this season. At the end of the match, the Belarusian tennis player greeted and blew kisses to the audience present.
Coco Gauff, the third seed, also had an outstanding performance, advancing to her second consecutive semifinal with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Laura Siegemund.
Gauff, who lost in the China Open semifinals last week against Amanda Anisimova, will face Iga Swiatek or Jasmine Paolini in the next round, who played a later match.
Sabalenka will face Jessica Pegula, the sixth seed, who was previously forced to play a third set for the seventh consecutive time. Pegula lost the first set against Katerina Siniakova, but managed to recover to win the next two, with a final score of 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Pegula reaches this instance after defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova and her American compatriot Hailey Baptiste, in a match where she needed seven match points to secure the victory.
