Emma Raducanu demonstrated her worth at Indian Wells with a convincing 6-1 and 6-3 victory over Anastasia Zakharova, securing her place in the next round. Raducanu arrived at the WTA 1000 tournament after a streak of three consecutive losses, seeking to regain her form after parting ways with her coach Francisco Roig in January. With Mark Petchey, a former ally, temporarily on her team, the British number 1 tennis player delivered an outstanding performance, defeating Zakharova at the BNP Paribas Open. Wearing a light blue outfit from her new Japanese sponsor Uniqlo, Raducanu started with an ace in her first service game, setting the tone for the match.

The world number 24 continued with an immediate break against Zakharova, establishing a 3-0 lead. Zakharova managed to score in the next service game, but Raducanu responded with another ace and a new break, earning Petchey’s approval. The first set closed in 32 minutes. Raducanu secured a break in the third game of the second set.

With Raducanu’s game being too much for Zakharova, the 2021 US Open winner continued to dominate the first-round match. Although Zakharova managed a break when Raducanu was preparing to serve for the match, the 23-year-old player regrouped and secured the victory in the next game, achieving a promising start at Indian Wells.
