Naomi Osaka Withdraws from Japan Open Due to Injury
The tennis player Naomi Osaka was forced to withdraw from the Japan Open on Friday due to a left leg injury, according to official sources.
This withdrawal in the quarterfinals of the tournament gives Jaqueline Cristian a direct pass to the semifinals, as announced by the WTA Tour.
The tournament organizers explained that Osaka, who was the top seed, failed to recover from the injury suffered in her second-round match.
Before the injury, Osaka achieved victories over Wakana Sonobe and Suzan Lamens, the 2024 champion. In the match against Lamens, Osaka was leading 5-0 in the third set after splitting the first two.
However, during an exchange with Lamens, Osaka felt discomfort in her left leg. Although she won the point, she requested medical time afterwards.
Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, returned to the court with her left thigh bandaged and with limited movement, but managed to close out the match on her third match point.
In another quarterfinal match of the Japan Open, Leylah Fernandez defeated Rebecca Šramková with a score of 7-6 (2), 6-3.
