Kei Nishikori Withdraws from US Open Due to Injury
Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori announced his withdrawal from the US Open this Wednesday due to a back injury that he has not fully recovered from. Nishikori, who suffered the injury in May, had already withdrawn from Roland Garros. Despite his return to competition this month, where he lost in the first round of the Cincinnati tournament, the tennis player has confirmed that his back is not in condition to compete in New York.Nishikori reached the number 4 spot in the world ranking in 2015, the highest position achieved by an Asian player in the history of men’s tennis. However, injuries have affected his performance in recent years, which has led him to the 88th position in the ranking. The player will be replaced in the tournament by a tennis player who loses in the final rounds of the qualifying phase.“Hi fans, unfortunately I won’t be ready for the US Open. I had an MRI on my back and it’s still not 100% healed,” Nishikori wrote in a social media post.
