Kei Nishikori Withdraws from US Open Due to Injury
Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori has announced his withdrawal from the US Open due to a back injury that has not yet fully healed. Nishikori, who suffered the injury in May, had already withdrawn from the French Open. The 2014 US Open runner-up tried to return to competition this month, but a first-round loss in Cincinnati showed him that his back was not recovered enough to compete in New York.Nishikori reached the number 4 spot in the world ranking in 2015, the highest position achieved by an Asian player in the history of men’s tennis. However, injuries have affected his performance in recent years, which has led him to the number 88 spot. He missed the entire 2022 season due to a hip injury. Nishikori’s place in the tournament will be taken by a player who loses in the final rounds of qualifying.“Hi fans, unfortunately I won’t be ready for the US Open. I had an MRI on my back and it’s still not 100% healed. I’m working hard to get back on the court soon. Thanks for the support,” Nishikori wrote on his social media.
