McEnroe: Alcaraz and Sinner, Favorites Against Nadal in His Best Moment

The current tennis elite, represented by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, has reached such a high level that, according to John McEnroe’s analysis, both players would be favorites to beat Rafael Nadal “in his prime.” Alcaraz and Sinner starred in an epic final at Roland Garros, a match that is already considered one of the best in the history of the tournament. The Spaniard defeated his rival in an exciting five-set duel, thus achieving his fifth Grand Slam. Alcaraz reached this mark at the same age as Nadal when he won his fifth title, with 22 years, one month and three days. Sinner, at 23 years old, already has two Grand Slam titles, and between them they have won seven of the last eight major tournaments. Nadal, throughout his outstanding career, achieved 22 Grand Slam titles, including a record of 14 at Roland Garros, before retiring in November of last year.

If we analyze the current level of play of Sinner and Alcaraz, and pit them against Nadal on clay, one could seriously argue that both would be favorites to beat Nadal, even in his prime.

John McEnroe
McEnroe, winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles and now a television commentator, made these statements. McEnroe added: “I don’t think any of them will reach 20 or 24 titles. That level is very difficult to achieve, almost impossible; there is more competition in the game, players with more powerful strokes and more factors at play.”

In the first Grand Slam final between two players born in the 2000s, Alcaraz saved three match points before prevailing with a score of 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10-2), extending his dominance over Sinner. Furthermore, he ended Sinner’s streak of 20 consecutive victories in Grand Slam tournaments. Alcaraz told Sinner: “I am very happy to make history with you in this tournament. I am sure you will be champion not once, but many times. It is a privilege to share the court with you in every tournament, making history together.”
