Significant Withdrawals at the Cincinnati Open: Mboko and Osaka Withdraw

The Cincinnati Open suffers significant losses. Victoria Mboko and Naomi Osaka, finalists of the Canadian Open, have decided not to participate in the tournament. Mboko, 18-year-old Canadian tennis player, winner of her first WTA 1000 title in Montreal, withdraws due to a left wrist injury.

I just want to take care of my wrist a little bit at the moment, and I think it’s too soon to go and play again in, like, two days. I think I’m going to skip that one and prepare for the next tournaments.

Osaka, for her part, cites a “scheduling change” according to the Cincinnati Open organization. Mboko, after his victory over Osaka in the Canadian Open final, revealed that he injured his wrist in the semifinals and underwent an MRI. Both players, not being seeded in Cincinnati, had received byes for the second round after their performance in Montreal. Mboko and Osaka’s absences have generated changes in Friday’s schedule in Cincinnati, with additional matches for the “lucky losers” from the qualifying phase.
  • Cristina Bucsa and Yuan Yue replace Mboko.
  • Solana Sierra and Iva Jovic take Osaka’s place.
Despite not being seeded in Cincinnati, both Mboko and Osaka are expected to be seeded at the upcoming US Open, thanks to their recent performances in Montreal. Mboko, who started the year outside the top 300, is now ranked number 24 in the world ranking, his best position to date. Osaka is currently ranked 25th, her best ranking since her return after maternity.
