Petra Kvitova Bids Farewell to Wimbledon: End of an Era in Women’s Tennis

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has said goodbye to the tournament that saw her shine on two occasions. The 35-year-old Czech tennis player announced that she will retire from the professional circuit after the US Open, which will be held in September. Her farewell at Wimbledon came after a match on Court No. 1, where she fell to the tenth seed, Emma Navarro, with a score of 6-3 and 6-1.

This place holds the best memories I could wish for. I never dreamed of winning Wimbledon and I won it twice. This is something very special.

Kvitova, visibly emotional, expressed her affection for the tournament in an on-court interview, a tradition reserved for the match winner. “I will miss Wimbledon, for sure. I will miss tennis, I will miss the fans. But I am ready for the next chapter of my life and I am looking forward to returning as a member,” she added. The Czech tennis player, who received a special invitation to participate, was unable to compete in last year’s tournament due to her maternity leave. Emma Navarro, 24 years old, highlighted Kvitova’s career, acknowledging her impact on women’s tennis. “Petra has been an incredible player and, obviously, she won this tournament twice, then had a child and came back, which is an inspiring story,” Navarro commented. Kvitova achieved her victories at Wimbledon in 2011, defeating Maria Sharapova, and in 2014, where she defeated Eugenie Bouchard. The tennis player has always expressed her admiration for the tournament.

I think it’s the best tournament in the world.

The US Open will mark the end of his professional career. Kvitova assured that her decision is final, pointing out that motivation and physical wear and tear are important factors. “I am sure. The motivation is different than it was before,” she concluded.
