Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner

Italy, without the need for its star Jannik Sinner, has once again demonstrated its dominance in the Davis Cup. Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the Italian team to victory, securing the title with a resounding 2-0 victory over Spain in Sunday’s final. This triumph marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title and the third consecutive one, a feat not seen since the United States achieved it between 1968 and 1972. Sinner, world number two, chose not to participate in this edition to focus on preparation for the next season. Lorenzo Musetti, also absent, was not required for the victory. The Italian team demonstrated their strength by winning all their matches 2-0 during the week at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, overcoming Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals. Spain, for its part, was also diminished by the absence of its main figure, Carlos Alcaraz. In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with scores of 6-3, 6-4. Cobolli, for his part, starred in an epic comeback against Jaume Munar, winning 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 and securing the decisive point, as he had already done on the three previous occasions this week.

Cobolli dropped his racket to the ground and was lifted by his Italian teammates.

Italy conquered the Davis Cup for the first time in 1976, and then in 2023 and 2024 in Malaga. This victory represents the first time they have won at home. Spain, six-time champion, was playing the final for the first time since 2019.
