Italy returns to the Davis Cup final after epic battle

Italy, the reigning champion, secured a place in the Davis Cup final after an exciting semi-final. The hero of the day was Flavio Cobolli, who starred in a memorable match against Zizou Bergs of Belgium. Cobolli won with partials of 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (15) in a match full of drama. The Italian tennis player saved seven match points before sealing the victory for his country. After squandering six match points, Cobolli finally managed to close out the match. The celebration was effusive, unleashing joy among his teammates and the audience present.

“We fight for our country, for this victory, but in the end, I realized my dream. I played for my whole team, my family, and it’s one of the best days of my life,” declared Cobolli.

The tiebreaker of the third set, with a score of 17-15, became the sixth longest in the history of the Davis Cup. Cobolli’s victory secured Italy’s place in the final, making the doubles match a mere formality. Matteo Berrettini also contributed to the Italian triumph by defeating Raphael Collignon with a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Italy reaches the final with a streak of 13 consecutive victories and will face the winner of the semi-final between Germany and Spain. The absence of Carlos Alcaraz, number one in the world, is a factor to take into account for the Spanish team. The captain of the Italian team, Filippo Volandri, expressed his amazement at Cobolli’s match.

“In my five years as captain, I had never seen anything like it. But this is what the Davis Cup does. It was incredible. In the end, I told Cobolli, it’s 5% tactics and 95% heart,” commented Volandri.

Berrettini, for his part, had a calmer match, demonstrating his experience and solidity on the court. The Davis Cup Finals 8 represents the sixth edition of this renewed event, where the champion is defined at a neutral venue.
