Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner

Italy continues to demonstrate its dominance in the Davis Cup, securing its fourth title without the need for its star, Jannik Sinner. Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the way for the Italians in the final against Spain, winning their singles matches and securing an insurmountable 2-0 lead. This triumph marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title, and the third consecutive. The last nation to achieve a similar streak was the United States, which won five titles in a row between 1968 and 1972. Sinner, number two in the world, chose not to participate this week to prepare for the upcoming season. Lorenzo Musetti, ranked number 8, also did not play. Italy demonstrated its strength by winning its three matches this week 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, after eliminating Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals. Spain, for its part, was also affected by the absence of its star, Carlos Alcaraz, number one in the world. In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Cobolli then came back to beat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point, as he did on all three occasions this week. Cobolli reacted by dropping his racket to the ground and was lifted by his Italian teammates. Italy won the Davis Cup for the first time in 1976, followed by victories in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home. Spain, six-time champion, reached the final for the first time since 2019.
