Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner

Italy continues to demonstrate its dominance in the Davis Cup, securing its fourth title without the need for its star, Jannik Sinner. Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the Italian team, both triumphing in their individual matches to achieve an insurmountable 2-0 lead over Spain in Sunday’s final. This victory marks the fourth Davis Cup title for Italy and the third consecutive. The last time a nation achieved three titles in a row was the United States, which won five times in a row from 1968 to 1972. Sinner, world number two and a key player in the last two years, chose not to participate this week, preferring to focus on preparation for the next season. Lorenzo Musetti, ranked number 8, was also not present. Italy proved they didn’t need their stars, winning their three matches this week 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, after eliminating Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals. Spain, for its part, was also affected by the absence of its star, Carlos Alcaraz, who occupies the first position in the ranking. In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Subsequently, Cobolli came back to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point, as he had already done on the three previous occasions this week. Cobolli celebrated his victory with his teammates. Italy won the Davis Cup for the first time in 1976, followed by victories in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home. Spain, six-time champion, reached the final for the first time since 2019.
