Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner
Italy has once again demonstrated its dominance in the Davis Cup, securing its fourth title in the competition. On this occasion, the victory came without the participation of its star, Jannik Sinner.
Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the Italian team, both triumphing in their individual matches in the final against Spain, securing an insurmountable 2-0 lead.
This triumph represents the fourth Davis Cup title for Italy and the third consecutive one, a feat not seen since the United States achieved it between 1968 and 1972.
Sinner, world number two and a key player in Italy’s recent successes, chose not to participate this week, preferring to focus on preparation for the upcoming season. Lorenzo Musetti, also absent, was also not part of the team.
Italy demonstrated its strength by winning all its matches 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, overcoming Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals.
Spain, for its part, was also deprived of its main figure, Carlos Alcaraz, number one in the world.
In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Subsequently, Cobolli came back to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point, as he did on all three occasions this week. Cobolli’s celebration, with the throwing of his racket and being lifted by his teammates, was a reflection of Italian joy.
Italy conquered the Davis Cup for the first time in 1976, and then in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home.
Spain, six-time champion, reached the final for the first time since 2019.
