Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner
Italy continues to reign in the Davis Cup, demonstrating its power in world tennis even without the presence of its star, Jannik Sinner. In a demonstration of strength and determination, the Italian team secured its fourth Davis Cup title, the third consecutive. Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli were the undisputed heroes for Italy in Sunday’s final against Spain, both winning their singles matches and securing an insurmountable 2-0 lead.Sinner, world number two and a key player in Italy’s recent successes, chose not to participate this week, preferring to focus on preparation for the upcoming season. Lorenzo Musetti, also absent, was also not part of the team. Italy demonstrated its superiority by winning all its matches this week 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, eliminating Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals. Spain, for its part, also felt the absence of its star, Carlos Alcaraz, number one in the world. In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Subsequently, Cobolli came back to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point, as he had done on the previous three occasions this week. Emotion took over Cobolli, who celebrated the victory with his teammates. Italy won its first Davis Cup title in 1976, followed by victories in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home. Spain, with six titles, reached the final for the first time since 2019.It’s the fourth Davis Cup title for Italy and the third in a row.
