Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner
Italy continues to reign in the Davis Cup, demonstrating its power in world tennis even without the presence of its star, Jannik Sinner. In a demonstration of strength and determination, the Italian team won the title, consolidating its position as one of the strongest teams at the moment. Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the way for Italy, securing the victory with their impressive performances in singles. Both tennis players won their respective matches, establishing an insurmountable 2-0 lead over Spain in Sunday’s final. This triumph marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title and the third consecutive one, a feat not seen since the United States’ streak of five consecutive victories between 1968 and 1972. Sinner, who led Italy to glory in the last two editions, chose not to participate this week, preferring to focus on his preparation for the upcoming season. The absence of Lorenzo Musetti also added to the team’s losses. Despite these absences, Italy demonstrated their depth and ability, winning all their matches this week with a score of 2-0. On the road to the final, they eliminated Austria in the quarter-finals and Belgium in the semi-finals. Spain, for its part, also regretted the absence of its star, Carlos Alcaraz. In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Cobolli, for his part, showed his composure by coming back to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point for the Italian victory, as he did on the three occasions this week. Cobolli’s celebration, with the throwing of his racket and the jubilation of his teammates, was the image of the victory.
Italy conquered the Davis Cup for the first time in 1976, and then repeated the feat in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have achieved the triumph at home. Spain, six-time champion, reached the final for the first time since 2019.
