SYDNEY – Lleyton Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, returned from retirement alongside his son Cruz in doubles at the New South Wales Open Challenger tournament, concluding Thursday with a quarterfinal loss.
Hewitt, 44 years old and former world number 1, who won the US Open in 2001 and Wimbledon in 2002, and retired from the individual circuit in 2016, teamed up with his 16-year-old son Cruz to beat Hayden Jones and Pavle Marinkov with a score of 6-1, 6-0 on Wednesday.
However, the father-son team lost 7-5, 6-4 to Dane Sweeny and Calum Puttergill in the quarterfinals.
Lleyton Hewitt is the captain of the Australian Davis Cup team. Cruz Hewitt is one of the three children that Hewitt has with his wife, former actress Bec Hewitt.
