Coco Gauff Overcomes Adversity at the US Open

American tennis player Coco Gauff demonstrated her resilience at the US Open, overcoming a difficult start to advance to the next round. Gauff, aware of the high expectations and her own pressures, faced a challenging match in which emotions were running high. The young athlete, seeded number 3 in the tournament, experienced a moment of great tension on the court. After losing the first set against Donna Vekic, Gauff couldn’t hold back the tears. The situation seemed to be complicated by double faults that cost her crucial points. However, the tennis player managed to recover and change the course of the match.

I just show people what it is to be human, and I have bad days, but I think it’s more about how you get up after those bad moments and how you present yourself after that.

Gauff, who won her first Grand Slam title in 2023, had to deal with her service problems. This season she leads the circuit with more than 300 double faults. To improve this aspect, she hired Gavin MacMillan, an expert in biomechanics, who has worked on improving Aryna Sabalenka’s serve. MacMillan modified Gauff’s technique, which involved a great effort and adaptation. Despite the nerves and pressure, the tennis player managed to focus and overcome Vekic with a score of 7-6 (5), 6-2. In the first set, Gauff had seven double faults and lost four of her six service games. Vekic, for her part, also suffered problems with her serve, committing ten double faults. After the first set, Gauff regrouped, and the second set was more fluid, with only one double fault and no service breaks. The presence of gymnast Simone Biles in the audience was a motivating factor for Gauff. Gauff’s next opponent will be Magdalena Frech, who managed to advance to the third round. American Amanda Anisimova also advanced to the next round after defeating Maya Joint.
