Coco Gauff Wins Wuhan Open After Defeating Jessica Pegula
In an all-American final that kept everyone on the edge of their seats, Coco Gauff emerged victorious over Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-4, 7-5, conquering the Wuhan Open this Sunday.
Gauff, 21 years old, added her second title of the year to her impressive career, following her victory at Roland Garros on clay. This triumph represents the eleventh singles title in her professional career.
The match, filled with excitement, saw Gauff, currently ranked number three in the world, showing great resilience. After being down 5-3 in the first set, Gauff managed to save the set with her serve and then broke Pegula’s serve, who was ranked sixth, to tie the score at 5-5.
The tension reached its peak when a forehand by Pegula went wide, giving Gauff her first match point. Gauff did not miss the opportunity and sealed the victory with a powerful forehand after a brief exchange of shots.
Pegula, 31, had achieved a great victory in the semifinals against Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one. However, in the final, she couldn’t maintain the momentum and missed the opportunity to obtain her tenth individual title. With this victory, Gauff becomes the second American to win the Wuhan title, following in the footsteps of Venus Williams, who achieved it in 2015.
This match marked the seventh encounter between both players, and the first in a final. In the overall history, Pegula leads 4-3 against Gauff, with whom she has shared successes in doubles, winning several WTA titles.
Gauff improves her record in finals to 11-3, while Pegula now has a record of 9-11 in finals.
