Coco Gauff Conquers Wuhan Open in All-American Final

American tennis player Coco Gauff won the Wuhan Open, after defeating her compatriot Jessica Pegula in a thrilling final that ended with scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Gauff, demonstrating a solid game, secured her second title of the year, adding this triumph to the one obtained at Roland Garros. With this victory, the young tennis player has accumulated a total of 11 titles in her professional career.

Winning every match of the tournament in straight sets, I don’t know if I had achieved that before in a title run. I feel very proud of what I achieved this week, regardless of today’s result.

The match became dramatic in the second set, when Gauff, at a crucial moment with an unfavorable score of 5-3, managed to hold her serve and subsequently break Pegula’s, tying the score at 5-5. The pressure intensified when Pegula, in an attempt to secure the point, sent a forehand out of the court, giving Gauff her first opportunity to close the match. Gauff took advantage of the situation and, with a powerful forehand, sealed the victory after a brief exchange. Despite Pegula’s effort, who had previously overcome Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals, Gauff demonstrated her superiority on the court. Gauff becomes the second American to win the Wuhan title, following in the footsteps of Venus Williams, who achieved it in 2015. This match represented the seventh encounter between both players, with an overall record of 4-3 in favor of Pegula. It is worth noting that both tennis players have shared successes in doubles, winning several WTA titles together.

We’ve spent a lot of time together and, although I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her very much. She is very mature for her age.

Jessica Pegula
Gauff improves her record in finals to 11-3, while Pegula registers a 9-11.
