Gauff Conquers Wuhan and Adds a New Title
Gauff, ranked third, secured her second title of the year after her victory at Roland Garros on clay. This triumph brings her collection to 11 titles in her professional career. In the second set, with an adverse score of 5-3, Gauff demonstrated resilience by saving the set. She managed to hold her serve and then broke Pegula’s, tying the score at 5-5. The definition came after an error by Pegula and a powerful shot by Gauff that gave her the decisive point. Pegula, who defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals, couldn’t maintain her momentum and lost the opportunity to obtain her tenth title. Gauff becomes the second American to win the Wuhan tournament, after Venus Williams in 2015. This match marked the seventh encounter between both tennis players, being the first time they face each other in a final. Pegula leads the overall record with a score of 4-3.Winning every match of the tournament in straight sets, I don’t know if I’ve achieved that before in a title run. I’m very proud of what I achieved this week, regardless of today’s result.
