Taylor Fritz Advances in US Open After Defeating Lloyd Harris
American tennis player Taylor Fritz overcame a tough challenge against Lloyd Harris on Wednesday, securing his place in the third round of the US Open and continuing his impressive performance this summer.
Fritz, who is the fourth seed and US Open runner-up last year, managed to recover after losing the first set to finally win with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 and 6-4.
Initially, Fritz couldn’t convert any of the eight break point opportunities in the first two sets, but then capitalized on five of seven in the following two sets.
Since the conclusion of Roland Garros, Fritz has a record of 23-5, making him the player with the most tournament-level wins on the men’s circuit during that period.
Ben Shelton, also American, follows closely with a record of 19-6, and was scheduled to play later on Wednesday in the night session on the Louis Armstrong court.
Fritz and Shelton are competing to be the highest-ranked American tennis player at the end of the tournament. Shelton, with fewer points to defend, would need to reach the round of 16 and advance one round further than Fritz to surpass him in the ranking.
In the next round, Fritz will face Swiss player Jerome Kym, who defeated American Brandon Nakashima with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5, 3-6, and 7-6 (8).
Another American who failed to advance on Wednesday was Marcos Giron, who suffered a notable comeback by Benjamin Bonzi, after his victory in the first round.
Bonzi, of French nationality and 29 years old, managed to recover from a two-set deficit to eliminate Giron with a score of 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and 6-4.
