Fritz eliminates the last Canadian in Toronto; Rublev and Shelton advance

In an exciting day of tennis at the National Bank Open, American Taylor Fritz, the second seed, defeated Canadian Gabriel Diallo in the third round. Fritz demonstrated his superiority on the court, securing the victory with a score of 6-4, 6-2.

I thought the crowd was very nice to me, playing against the last player in the Canadian tournament. I thought it was going to be a little more hostile. But I guess everyone is very nice. I’ve dealt with much worse.

With this victory, Fritz advanced to the fourth round, where he will face Czech Jiri Lehecka, seeded number 19. Lehecka secured his spot after defeating Arthur Fils of France with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Taylor Fritz, currently ranked number 4 in the world, has 10 ATP Tour titles in his career, including wins this year in Eastbourne and Stuttgart. In another notable match, fourth-seeded Ben Shelton defeated compatriot Brandon Nakashima with scores of 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (5). Shelton will now face Flavio Cobolli of Italy, seeded number 13. Additionally, Andrey Rublev, sixth seed, defeated Lorenzo Sonego of Italy with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

In the second and third sets, I was able to play more aggressively, with fewer errors. Let’s see what happens next, I am super excited and motivated.

Frances Tiafoe, seventh seed, also secured his place in the next round after defeating Aleksandar Vukic of Australia with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Tiafoe will face Alex de Minaur of Australia in his next match. It is worth noting the absence of Jannik Sinner, the 2023 champion, and Carlos Alcaraz, number 2 in the world, who did not participate in this hard court event.
