Taylor Fritz Advances to the Third Round of the US Open After Defeating Lloyd Harris

American tennis player Taylor Fritz overcame a tough challenge against Lloyd Harris to reach the third round of the US Open, solidifying his outstanding summer season. Fritz, seeded number four and US Open runner-up last year, came back after losing the first set to win with partial scores of 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 and 6-4. After failing to convert any break opportunities in the first two sets, Fritz converted 5 of 7 in the last two.

I’ve known Lloyd forever. He’s dangerous because he’s solid from the baseline. He doesn’t make many mistakes and has a very good serve, so if you’re not at your best, it’s easy… I had a few break chances. He played well to save the break points.

Fritz was joined in the third round by the 17th seed, Frances Tiafoe, who defeated another American, Martin Damm Jr., with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (8) and 7-5. Tiafoe achieved an impressive 86% effectiveness with his first serve and saved all three break points he faced, accumulating 13 aces with only one double fault.

He fought incredibly well. He’s going to be a nightmare for many.

Since the beginning of 2020, Tiafoe has won 22 matches at the US Open, surpassed only by Daniil Medvedev (25).

Fritz, for his part, has a record of 23-5 since the end of the French Open, the most tour-level wins in that period. Right behind him is also the American Ben Shelton (20-6), who defeated Pablo Carreño Busta 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. Fritz and Shelton compete to be the highest-ranked American at the end of the tournament; Shelton, with fewer points to defend, would need to reach the round of 16 and advance one round further than Fritz to surpass him in the ranking. Fritz’s next opponent will be Swiss qualifier Jerome Kym, who defeated American Brandon Nakashima 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8). Another American to fall on Wednesday was Marcos Giron, who suffered a great comeback by Benjamin Bonzi. Bonzi, a 29-year-old Frenchman, recovered from a two-set deficit to eliminate Giron with a score of 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. American Eliot Spizzirri also lost 6-0, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4 to the number 32 seed, Luciano Darderi, from Italy.
