Leylah Fernandez Crowned Champion at the Japan Open

Tennis player Leylah Fernandez won the title at the WTA Japan Open, after defeating young prospect Tereza Valentova in an exciting final. Fernandez, who faced Valentova, an 18-year-old player from the qualifying rounds, managed to win with scores of 6-0, 5-7 and 6-3. In her eighth final as a professional, the 2021 US Open runner-up showed her quality from the start, dominating the first set in just 29 minutes. However, Valentova reacted in the second set, managing to equalize the score after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game. The decisive set saw Fernandez break her opponent’s serve in the fourth game, allowing her to take a crucial lead. Despite the Czech player’s strong resistance, Fernandez remained calm and secured her second title of the season, adding to the one obtained at the WTA 500 D.C. Open in July.
