OSAKA, Japan – Leylah Fernandez was crowned champion of the Japan Open WTA this Sunday, after defeating the young Tereza Valentova with a score of 6-0, 5-7 and 6-3. This triumph represents the fifth title in Fernandez’s career.

In her eighth final, the 2021 US Open runner-up dominated the first set in just 29 minutes. However, Valentova reacted in the second set, managing to tie the match after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game.

In the decisive set, Fernandez, currently ranked 27th, secured a crucial break in the fourth game. Subsequently, she withstood the Czech player’s comeback attempt, thus securing her second title of the season, after having won the Washington Open (WTA 500) in July.
