Jack Draper Advances at Wimbledon After Baez’s Injury Retirement

Jack Draper, with a solid performance, secured his place in the second round of Wimbledon after his opponent, Sebastián Báez, retired due to an injury. Draper’s physical superiority seemed to be too much for the Argentinian, who was affected by an injury suffered at the beginning of the second set. Draper, who was leading the match with partial scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 2-1, demonstrated his dominance on the court. Báez, after a fall and injury at the beginning of the second set, could not continue, allowing Draper to advance. Draper started the match perfectly, breaking Báez’s serve in the first game, amidst the intense London summer heat.

The British player took complete control of the match with another break in the fifth game, securing the first set in just over 20 minutes of play on Court No. 1. After receiving treatment on his right knee during a five-minute break, Báez was unable to continue, and Draper secured his place in the next round. Draper, the highest-ranked British seed at Wimbledon since Andy Murray’s return in 2017, will need to employ all his mental and physical reserves to navigate the challenges of Wimbledon under intense media attention.

I wanted to play a bit more, to be honest. It’s not the way to win and I wish Sebastian the best in his recovery, of course.

In the next round, Draper will face Croatian Marin Cilic, a player who has won the US Open and also reached a Wimbledon final. Draper could face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

I don’t think about it until people mention it every five minutes! I just think about what I can control and play the best tennis I can.
